When do I need to add salt to my water softener?

Your quick guide to keeping soft water flowing in Houston.

The short answer? It depends on your water hardness, your household size, and your softener’s capacity but most Houston homeowners need to add salt every 4–8 weeks. Personally, I check on mine the same day every month and go from there.

Why Salt Matters

Salt in the brine tank is what allows your water softener to recharge its resin beads and keep removing hardness minerals. Without enough salt, your softener stops softening, fast.

If you’ve had your system awhile or are particularly sensitive to changes in the water, you’ll notice it right away. I always do.

Factors That Affect Refill Frequency

  • Water hardness level — Higher hardness = faster salt usage

  • Household water use — More people = more water softened = more salt used

  • System size & efficiency — Salt usage will relate to household usage and hardness level. If you work with Environmental ProTech, we size your system based on your situation, not a one size fits all. That means, you will have the best size and efficiency for your home. If your home size changes drastically (like when I started having kids and cleaning a lot more cloth diapers…) you may notice a difference in your salt usage.

Pro Tip: The “Quarter Full Rule”

Never let your brine tank drop below a quarter full. Check it at least once a month and top off as needed.
