How does a water softener work?

The quick answer: it removes the nasty stuff you don’t want on your skin, hair, in your food, or near your family.

The deeper science: the resin is a special material inside the mineral tank designed to remove hard particles of lime and calcium. This is done by an ion exchange process.

The resin beads inside the softener tank have an opposite electrical charge than the dissolved particles of the incoming water. Because of this electrical charge difference, the dissolved particles suspended in your water will cling to the resin beads on contact, thereby ridding the water of these particles, causing the water exiting the unit to be soft.

The results: you have high quality, clean water straight from your faucets.

But why is it so important to have soft water?

Environmental ProTech was chosen to be the city of Houston’s designated water treatment testing agent. We know first hand just how many industrial chemicals, pesticides, and disinfectants lives inside the untreated water and we wouldn’t wish it’s exposure on our worst enemy.

Here are just a few of the chemicals and pollutants found in the city of Houston’s tap water:

  • Chlorine, Chloramine, Ozone, Fluoride, Lead, Copper, Arsenic, Mercury, Atrazine, Glyphosate, Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Nitrates, Nitrites, Phosphates, Bacteria (e.g., E. coli), Viruses, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Total dissolved solids (TDS), Trihalomethanes (THMs), Haloacetic acids (HAAs), Chlorinated byproducts

You can see why having soft water at your home or office is vital.
