What to do about Arsenic
Most people associate arsenic with poison, not drinking water. But here’s the reality: arsenic can be found in groundwater throughout Texas, including in parts of the greater Houston area.
It doesn’t have a smell, taste, or color. That means if it’s in your water, you wouldn’t know without testing.
But first, we are not here to create fear.
We are here to educate and solve Houston’s water problems.
So, let’s break down what arsenic is, where it comes from, and how to remove it.
What Is Arsenic and Where Does It Come From?
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can dissolve into groundwater as water passes through rocks and soil. While it can come from industrial activity, in most cases in Texas it’s simply geologic.
Natural Deposits: Houston-area wells may pick up arsenic from deep underground rock formations
Industrial Runoff: Old agricultural practices and industry can add to the problem in some areas
Private Wells: More vulnerable than city water, since municipal systems are regularly tested and regulated
Why Arsenic in Water Is a Concern
Unlike chlorine or iron, arsenic doesn’t leave visible signs like odor, taste, or staining. But long-term exposure, even at low levels, can cause health problems.
Cancer Risks: Linked to bladder, lung, and skin cancers
Developmental Risks: Higher risk for infants, children, and pregnant women
Other Effects: Skin discoloration, circulatory issues, and weakened immune response
The U.S. EPA sets the maximum contaminant level (MCL) at 10 parts per billion (ppb).
Anything higher requires treatment, but many Houston-area private wells have tested above this threshold.
How to Remove Arsenic from Water
Boiling won’t remove arsenic, and simple filters (like pitcher filters or fridge filters) won’t touch it. You need advanced treatment:
Reverse Osmosis (R.O.): The most effective way to reduce arsenic from drinking water. An under-sink R.O. system can remove up to 99%
Whole-Home Treatment: In some cases, point-of-entry systems with advanced media are needed for high levels
Regular Testing: Even if your well has tested safe in the past, arsenic levels can shift over time depending on water table changes
