Why is the salt not going down on my water system?

For most Houston homeowners, checking the brine tank every few weeks is part of regular water softener maintenance. But what if you open the lid and notice that the salt level hasn’t moved? Is your system broken—or is something else going on?

Common Reasons the Salt Isn’t Going Down

  1. Salt Bridge Formation

    • A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms at the top of the salt pile, creating an empty space underneath. It makes the tank look full, but the salt isn’t actually reaching the water to dissolve.

    • Cause: High humidity, overfilling the tank, or using lower-quality salt.

  2. Salt Mushing

    • Instead of dissolving properly, salt granules break down into a thick sludge at the bottom of the tank. This can block the brine draw and stop the system from regenerating properly.

  3. Low Water Use

    • If your household isn’t using much water, the softener may not be regenerating often enough to use up salt.

  4. System Malfunction

    • Issues with the control valve, brine line, or float assembly can prevent the brine tank from refilling or drawing correctly.

How to Troubleshoot

  • Tap the Salt: Use a broom handle to very gently push down into the salt. If it feels hollow underneath, you likely have a bridge—break it up carefully.

  • Check the Water Level: If the tank is bone dry or unusually full, there may be a mechanical issue. Call Environmental ProTech at 281-495-4420 to have a professional technician out for a full diagnosis.

  • Inspect Salt Quality: Switch to high-purity evaporated salt pellets to avoid bridging and mushing.
