Why Is the Salt Not Going Down on My Water Softener?
You open your brine tank expecting the salt level to be lower—but it looks exactly the same as last month. Does that mean your softener isn’t working? Not necessarily.
We suggest a licensed professional service your system if there are any concerns.
Here are a few things you can check on your own…
Common Reasons Salt Isn’t Going Down
1. Salt Bridge
A hard crust forms on top, making it look full while the water underneath isn’t touching new salt.
Common in Houston’s humid climate or when tanks are overfilled.
2. Salt Mushing
Instead of dissolving, salt forms a sludge at the bottom of the tank.
Often caused by lower-quality salt.
3. Low Water Use
If your family’s been away or usage is low, regeneration may not have occurred.
4. Mechanical Issues
A stuck float or valve problem can prevent proper brine draw.
What to Do
Tap gently with a broom handle—if you feel hollow underneath, break the bridge.
Upgrade to high-purity evaporated pellets to reduce bridging and mushing.
Call for professional service if the tank is unusually wet, dry, or full despite normal use.
